How to use

Do not rely on this formula for sun protection. Use a tested, broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, along with shade and protective clothing.

Why we chose a mineral-based formula

Our interest in mineral-based care began with zinc oxide, a well-studied ingredient used in tested sunscreens. Mineral-only sunscreens are often recommended for sensitive skin, although comfort and tolerability depend on the complete formula.

Environmental questions also matter to us. Research into sunscreen ingredients and aquatic ecosystems continues, and mineral ingredients alone do not establish that a product is reef-safe. We make no reef-safety claim for our formulas.

I have personally used my mineral or sun tint formulations since 2017 without issues. This is my individual experience; skin reactions can differ, and it does not establish safety or sun protection for anyone else.

Where our Mineral Tint stands

Our Mineral Tint formulas remain in development. SPF and broad-spectrum protection require testing of the finished product and have not been established for either version. The balm’s water resistance has not been verified. Please use a tested, broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher sunscreen for sun protection.

Ingredients: purpose & research

Development formula; these are ingredient highlights. Sun protection is unverified. Use a tested sunscreen.

Water

The water-based part of the formulation.

Preservative

Included to help protect the water-based formula from microbial growth.

Zinc oxide

A mineral UV filter used in tested sunscreens. Its presence in this development formula does not establish SPF or UVA protection.

Squalane

A lightweight emollient that softens dry-feeling skin and gives the formula a smooth, silky glide.

Emulsifying wax NF

Helps oil and water stay mixed, creating the gel-cream’s lotion texture.

Cetyl alcohol

A fatty alcohol that thickens the formula and gives it a creamier, softer texture.

Vitamin E

An antioxidant ingredient that helps protect the oils from oxidation; it does not establish shelf life or SPF.

Iron oxide

Mineral pigments that add tint and help reduce the appearance of a white cast.

Mica

Adds subtle sheen and adjusts the formula’s cosmetic finish.

Care and storage

SPF, UVA protection and finished-product stability have not been established. A zinc oxide percentage or visible tint cannot establish an SPF rating.

A finished-product shelf life has not been established here. Changes in smell, color or texture are reasons to stop using the product. Skin products: try a small area first and stop if irritation occurs.
